Father’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to for us anime fans to celebrate the amazing dads and mentors in our lives than with a marathon of heartwarming anime?
To go with the occasion, we’ve handpicked a selection of shows on Crunchyroll that showcase the true meaning of fatherhood – through resilience, guidance, and unconditional love.
So grab some popcorn, settle in with that special person in your life, and check out these awesome anime!
1. Spy x Family (for the new hot dad on the block – Loid Forger)
- Genre: Comedy, Drama, Shonen
- Available in English & other regional dubs
- Link to the show
In the heart of a cold war, master spy Loid Forger adopts Anya, a telepathic orphan, and marries Yor, a deadly assassin, to create the perfect cover for his mission.
Loid may not be a biological father, but his dedication to protecting Anya and providing a loving home shines through his stoic exterior.
His unwavering commitment might be to his mission, however, he slowly begins to grasp the nuances of fatherhood and eventually becomes the standout character in this heartwarming spy comedy.
2. Buddy Daddies (for Kazuki Kurusu and Rei Suwa):
Two professional assassins, Kazuki and Rei, find themselves unexpectedly raising a young girl named Miri. This unconventional family navigates the challenges of parenthood while balancing their dangerous careers.
Kazuki and Rei’s contrasting personalities and unique approaches to childcare create a hilarious and heartwarming dynamic, making them a memorable father figure duo. You can just keep staring at Rei throughout the anime for all I care!
This anime is quite similar to Spy x Family, and – when you have two equally dashing father figures it becomes the perfect pick for a Father’s Day binge session! Two is better than one – like Taylor Swift famously said in her song!
3. Kakushigoto (for the totally committed single dad – Kakushi)
Now, this is a criminally underrated anime which I feel all of you should watch. The plot follows Kakushi Goto, a manga artist known for his raunchy work, who hides his profession from his young daughter, Hime.
He goes to great lengths to protect her innocence, creating a web of hilarious lies and misunderstandings in a bid to prevent her from finding out the truth.
Kakushi’s overprotective nature and unwavering love for Hime make him a relatable and endearing father figure. It’s an emotional and funny ride, and certainly one of the most wholesome shows on the list. My heart goes out for Kakushi, I feel that guy!!
4. Barakamon (for Handa Seishu):
Ah yes, Barakamon is one of my absolute favorites, and an anime I keep returning to every now and then! The plot follows Handa, a talented but arrogant calligrapher, who is exiled to a remote island after punching an art critic.
This unfamiliar place changes him and he begins to appreciate the little things in life. As the laid-back town and its residents teach him valuable life lessons, he slowly sheds his arrogant persona.
His interactions with the energetic Naru certainly is the highlight of the show.
Now, Handa Seishu might not be a biological father, nor an adoptive one. However, he perfectly plays the role of a mentor to a young Naru (willingly or unwillingly) and ends up winning hearts.
5. My Home Hero – (for the fiercly protective Tetsuo Tosu):
Tetsuo Tosu, is an ordinary salaryman, someone who doesn’t fit the bill of a mastermind hero. However, when he discovers that his daughter is being abused by her boyfriend (with Yakuza connections) he takes some drastic measures to protect her.
This leads him down a dark path. Tetsuo’s fierce love for his daughter and his willingness to do whatever it takes to keep her safe make him a complex and compelling father figure.
Trust me, you’ll get some serious Drishyam vibes with his anime, and if thrilling series are your forte, then you should blindly go and pick this one up!!
6. My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer (for the uber supportive Belgrieve):
Next up in this list, we have an anime for the fantasy lovers!
The young adventurer Belgrieve retires to a quieter life after losing his leg to a beast. While gathering herbs in the woods one day, he rescues an abandoned child, Angeline, and adopts her.
Angeline trains with her father and later achieves S-Rank in the capital’s adventurer guild. Five years later, she decides to return home.
Belgrieve’s unwavering love for his daughter and pride in her accomplishments make him a heartwarming example of a supportive father figure.
