Sunrise announced that its Mashin Hero Wataru (known in Japan as Mashin Eiyuu Den Wataru) franchise will be receiving a new TV anime series titled Mashin Souzouden Wataru. Further details on the anime’s premiere date, production staff, and voice cast have not yet been revealed.
A 33-second teaser video for the new series was also released, highlighting the new protagonist Mashin “Ryuujinmaru.”
The Mashin Hero Wataru series recently celebrated its 35th anniversary at a Japanese event this past weekend.
The original Mashin Hero Wataru TV anime series premiered from Sunrise in 1988 for a total of 45 episodes. A 46-episode sequel titled Mashin Hero Wataru 2 aired in 1990, followed by the 51-episode Chou Mashin Hero Wataru sequel in 1997. The franchise also inspired three OVA series that were released between 1989 and 1993.
An ONA series titled Mashin Hero Wataru: The Seven Spirits of Ryujinmaru was released in April 2020, in collaboration with Sunrise and Bandai Spirits’ Tamashii Nations toy brand. It was streamed on Bandai Spirits’ YouTube channel for nine total episodes. A compilation film of the series titled Mashin Hero Wataru Shichi Tamashii no Ryūjinmaru – Saikai- premiered in Japanese theaters in January 2022.
Mashin Hero Wataru follows the protagonist Wataru, who travels to the world of Soukaizan to resolve an incident. An evil presence has invaded the area and the robot Ryuujinmaru has been sealed. Thus, Wataru begins a new adventure with his friends Shibaraku, Toraou, and Himiko.
