The latest financial report from IG Port, the parent company of WIT Studio, has shed light on the development timeline of Netflix and WIT Studio’s highly anticipated THE ONE PIECE remake.
According to the financial report, which covers a quarterly period from Sep 1, 2023, to Nov 30, 2023, the remake project was already in work during this time frame as it was listed under the Video Production Operations section of IG Port as being in development for direct-to-streaming release.
THE ONE PIECE by WIT Studio stood prominently alongside other projects such as Kimi ni Todoke season 3, Moonrise, and the Terminator series by Production I.G, which are also being developed for direct streaming.
“In the video production business, we produced Kaiju 8 for TV, THE ONE PIECE, Kimi ni Todoke 3rd SEASON, Moonrise, and Terminator for streaming, and SPY x FAMILY CODE: White and Haikyu!! Garbage Dump Battle for theatrical animation, and SPY × FAMILY Season 2 for television animation, which has been delivered and started airing on TV. In addition, we produced and delivered animations for pachinko/pachislot machines and commercials,” the section of the report read.
The report, which summarizes the operational & financial results till Nov 30, 2023, suggests that the development of the anime had already begun weeks prior to the public unveiling of the project, which happened on Dec 17, 2023.
One Piece panel announced the remake of the long running anime at Jump Festa ’24 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the series.
Wit Studio will be producing the remake with a completely new animation, and will start by adapting the East Blue Saga. It will be exclusively streamed on Netflix.
One Piece is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation that premiered on Fuji TV in October 1999. It is based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga series of the same name.
Since its premiere in Japan, more than 1,000 episodes have been aired.
Additionally, Toei has developed fourteen animated feature films, one original video animation, and thirteen television specials.
One Piece manga series, written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, has been serialized in Shueisha’s shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump since July 1997, with its individual chapters compiled into 107 tankobon volumes as of November 2023.
