Scott Westerfeld’s original novel of the same name was published on October 6, 2009 and features illustrations by Keith Thompson. It is part of a trilogy of books that includes the sequels Behemoth in 2010 and Goliath in 2011.
Netflix describes the synopsis of Leviathan as:

As World War I begins to erupt, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected way… taking them on a fantastical, around-the- world adventure that will change both their lives forever.
