Please note that this is more of a rant and less of a review. Thanks for reading it anyways! Let’s get started.
If there is anything that I can confidently say about Chainsaw Man Part 2, its about how much Denji has suffered in this part.
The man has been in constant agony. Its not as if his trauma from having seen Power’s death, or eating Makima has completely subsided.
And despite that, Fujimoto just keeps piling on the misery for our boy. The same story repeated in Chainsaw Man chapter 171.
After losing his dogs, being provoked by Barem and the weapons hybrids – Denji lost it and turned into the Chainsaw Man…only to find himself being dismembered by the Public Safety officers.
However, the biggest shock for him came when he decided to go for an unassuming Sushi after his huge ordeal – only to find Nayuta’s head on the conveyer belt.
The question of whether Nayuta really is dead is something for another time.
Why?
Because as far as Denji knows, he lost the only family he had left and also any shred of sanity that he might have had. Investigating the veracity of the scene on display was least of his concerns.
Thanks to the horror that unfolded in front of his eyes, he could no longer keep his promise to Pochita. The normal life he dreamt of living was not meant to be. And so, we readers got to see a familiar transformation in Chainsaw Man chapter 171.
The gut burst forth from Denji’s stomach and wrapped around his neck – and in no time the Chainsaw Devil stood over a decapitated Barem Bridge.
Well, watching Denji lose hope sure was hard. However, this chapter also gave me one of the most satisfying moments.
Barem Bridge had become a total tool, thanks to the extent he went to break Denji. He literally took a page out of Makima’s book. On top of that, he had the gall to say that he being “too cruel” in order to save the world. He forgets he is not the protagonist of some dark seinen manga!
So, when Denji just crunched the ponytailed twat’s neck with his hand and popped his head off – I felt a strange sense of satisfaction surging through my body. I was happy even. Almost felt as if Denji just crushed open a soda can!
Now, questions have been raised about Fami’s involvement in this whole fiasco involving Denji and Nayuta. Word in the fandom is that Barem was just a stooge. And CSM 171 only added fuel to these theories.
While we get to see the shocked expressions of almost everyone who accompanied Denji to the Sushi place – including Asa, Fami’s face was conveniently missing.
Given how she nonchalantly continued to chow down despite seeing her sister’s head on the conveyer belt in the previous chapter, we seriously have to start doubting her intentions. And if this plan indeed was her brainchild, and if Denji even gets a whiff of it, Fami’s had it coming then.
No matter her end goal – I don’t think the Chainsaw Man will be forgiving her for her actions.
However, what Denji will do next needs to be seen. It will be an unbiased slicer dicer show till Pochita is in the driving seat.
Let’s come back to Asa/Yoru for a second. Guessing by their reaction, neither were they expecting to see Nayuta’s head on the conveyer belt, nor did they think the Chainsaw Devil would pop out at this time.
Sure, the War Devil considered the Chainsaw Man her nemesis. However, given the current situation Yoru is no match for ‘The Hero of Hell’. Allow me to modify Turkish’s (Jason Statham) quote from Snatch to suit this situation – “Yoru ‘the fiend’ is praying. And if she isn’t, she f*#king should be!”
Moving on, I specifically want to commend Fujimoto for the time and effort he might have put into designing characters who probably won’t last even an entire chapter.
The Public Safety’s Special Division 5, which was on stand by, quickly moves into engage the Chainsaw Devil.
It is the same division which Makima had founded, comprising of the weapons hybrids, in order to take down the Chainsaw Devil previously.
However, the new division seems to be comprised of a cocky leader and 5-6 fiends who are most probably going to be cut open by the Chainsaw Devil in no time. They didn’t even notice that it had turned up behind them and they were, funnily enough, walking in the opposite direction.
No matter the direction – at this moment I feel certain death awaits them!
