The upcoming The Quintessential Quintuplets* TV Special, which begins its three-week Japanese theatrical screening on September 20 JST, has received a main trailer and a key visual.
Aside from scenes of Uesugi Futaro’s Hawaii honeymoon with the Nakano quintuplets, the trailer previews the theme song “Gotoubun no Egao,” which is performed by the Nakano sisters’ voice actors.
The Quintessential Quintuplets* was announced in April as one of The Quintessential Quintuplets anime adaptation’s fifth anniversary projects, based on a draft by The Quintessential Quintuplets creator Negi Haruba. It is preceded by two TV anime seasons that premiered in 2019 and 2021, a movie, and a two-part 2023 TV anime special titled The Quintessential Quintuplets~.
The Quintessential Quintuplets began as a Kodansha-published manga by Haruba, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2017 and ended in 2020 with 14 tankoubon volumes. Kodansha USA describes its premise as:
Five girls who want to do anything but study, and their tutor: a high school boy who’s got book smarts and not much else. Futaro Uesugi took the tutoring gig because he was desperate for cash, but when his students—the five beautiful daughters of a wealthy businessman—find five times the excuses to slack off, what can he do?! At this rate, the sisters won’t graduate, so if he wants to get paid, Futaro must think of a plan to suit each of them … Which feels hopeless when five out of five of them think he’s a loser!
The first season of The Quintessential Quintuplets was directed by Satoshi Kuwabara at Tezuka Productions, while the second season was directed by Kaori at Bibury Animation Studios. The Quintessential Quintuplets~ was produced by Shaft and directed by Yukihiro Miyamoto.
Keiichiro Ochi was the series composer for the previous TV anime and wrote most of the episodes. He also wrote the movie’s screenplay. Michinosuke Nakamura was the first season’s character designer, and thereafter credited with character design cooperation. The Quintessential Quintuplets~ had Kazuya Shiotsuki as character designer.
