Rumiko Takahashi’s original Ranma 1/2 manga series debuted on Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday on August 19, 1987 and ended on March 6, 1996. A total of 38 tankobon volumes were released during its publication.
The manga originally inspired an 18-episode anime that began airing in 1989. This was followed by Ranma 1/2: Nettou-hen, which ran from 1989 to 1992 with 143 episodes. Viz Media releases the manga in English for North America.
The previous anime were produced by Studio Deen and had Atsuko Nakajima (Komi Can’t Communicate, Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto, Trinity Blood) as character designer. Tsutomu Shibayama (Chibi Maruko-chan co-director) directed the first series while Koji Sawai (.hack//Legend of the Twilight) and Junji Nishimura (Vlad Love, Extreme Hearts) co-directed Nettou-hen.
The new Ranma 1/2 anime is the second remake of a Takahashi manga, following the recent four-cour Urusei Yatsura anime.
VIZ Media describes the series as:
Being a teenage martial artist isn’t easy, especially for Ranma Saotome. During a training mission, Ranma takes an accidental dunk in a legendary cursed spring in China. Now, every time he’s splashed with cold water, he changes into a girl! That would be enough to complicate anyone’s life, even without the arranged fiancée who doesn’t like him (or says she doesn’t) and the constant stream of rivals and suitors for both his male and female forms. What’s a half guy, half girl to do?
