Takara Tomy‘s YouTube channel has uploaded the TRIGGER-produced Transformers 40th Anniversary Special Movie, which features plenty of 2D mecha animation, a BUMP OF CHICKEN song (“Mayday”), and (at the time of writing) region lock.
Akira Amemiya (SSSS.Gridman, SSSS.Dynazenon, Gridman Universe) directed the animation and also served as storyboard artist, unit director, animation director, and one of the key animators.
TRIGGER’s X (formerly Twitter) account released some stills from the nearly four-minute video and stated that not a lick of 3DCG was used.
The Transformers anniversary animation was previously teased in late August.
Hasbro’s Transformers franchise began in 1984, which saw the launch of its first toyline and animated TV series. The famous robots in disguise were originally toys from Takara Tomy’s (then called Takara) Diaclone and Microman lines. The transforming concept caught Hasbro’s eye, and to make them more attractive to an American audience, the company teamed up with Marvel Comics to come up with lore and character names to tie the products together.
