Once again, Chainsaw Man plunges us into the “what the hell is even happening” territory in Chapter 177, and it’s truly a shame that some so-called fans who dropped the second part of the series blaming the pacing are missing out on all this action.
Fujimoto continues to deliver action-packed chapters, one after another, without neglecting the intrigue and huge cliffhangers that keep readers on edge.
Chainsaw Man Chapter 177 is no exception.
The chapter kicks off right where we left off, with the Mouth Devil being restored following Yoru’s devastating attack. The new weapons Yoru now wields—the Tank and Gun Devil gauntlets on her arms—showcase immense power, and she doesn’t hesitate to use them against Pochita.
In my previous review, I pointed out how Yoru’s attack was eerily similar to Makima’s, and Chapter 177 subtly confirms that Makima was indeed using the Gun Devil’s power, likely via a contract.
This connection becomes more apparent as Yoru uses the same finger-bang technique we’ve seen Makima employ.
Interesting character dynamics:
One of the more nuanced aspects of this chapter is the internal conflict Yoru experiences regarding her “children.”
She reflects on how the Tank and Gun Devils, born out of war, were sacrificed to become her weapons. Fujimoto expands on this “War giving birth to weapons” analogy, which I actually liked. And for a second, it felt as if Yoru actually felt remorse.
But, despite the initial reluctance, her desire to defeat Chainsaw Man surpasses any emotional connection she had to her supposed kin. We can forgive Asa for thinking otherwise.
It’s interesting to see how Fujimoto chooses to highlight the complex nature of Yoru’s feelings.
She admits that while she felt hesitation in turning her children into weapons, ultimately, they were little more than property to her—tools to achieve her goals.
Asa’s reaction to Yoru’s cold, matter-of-fact dialogue is telling, hinting at a possible friction between the two in the future. Particularly if Yoru’s ruthless nature becomes more apparent.
This raises an important question: does Yoru truly have Asa’s best interests at heart, or is she merely using her to settle her own vendetta with Chainsaw Man?
It’s entirely possible that Yoru and Asa are both being manipulated by Fami. After all, if Pochita dies, will Denji be able to continue living? This is an interesting dynamic that I’m eager to see unfold as the story progresses.
As for Pochita, it seems his investment in this rivalry with Yoru is considerably less intense.
Yoru’s fixation on obliterating him feels one-sided, as Pochita is more focused on survival than revenge. And this leads us to one of the chapter’s best moments: Pochita begging for blood while singing the “family hamburger” song—a brilliant callback to Part 1, but also packed with deadpan humor.
Here we have the Chainsaw Devil, the so-called “hero of hell,” politely asking for blood instead of going on a rampage.
This moment also raises questions about how devils are categorized emotionally. Is Pochita just pretending to be docile, or has his relationship with Denji altered his nature?
The nature of devils is something that Fujimoto has highlighted previously with Nayuta’s dialogue in chapter 149 too. So, I won’t be surprised if we get more on this as the series progresses.
But what really steals the spotlight in this chapter is the dramatic escalation toward the end.
Yoru and the Statue of Liberty!
Noticing Chainsaw Man’s absence, Yoru gears up for another attack—this time posing like the Statue of Liberty, a move that causes over 400,000 members of the USA’s National Pistol Association to lose their index fingers.
The chapter closes with a crack appearing on the Statue of Liberty, setting the stage for what could be Yoru’s deadliest strike yet.
The theories are already flying fast. The prevailing assumption is that Yoru is summoning a devil hidden inside the Statue of Liberty.
Some fans are even holding out hope for the return of beloved characters like Reze or Power. However, I believe the chapter’s title, “Trigger Finger,” gives us a clearer hint.
All the 400,000 members of the NPA lost their trigger fingers. And in the final page of the chapter, we see Yoru bending her finger as if she is pulling a trigger.
If we think back, using firearms in Chainsaw Man requires a contract with the Gun Devil. It’s possible that these NPA members, having a connection to guns, were linked to the Gun Devil via contracts.
Yoru could be cashing in on these contracts to use the Gun Devil’s power for her attack. At least, that’s my theory.
As for the statue of Liberty cracking, I don’t have anything interesting to point out there. I am left scratching my head just like a lot of you guys I assume.
At this moment, a devil coming out the statue of liberty is a possibility. However, I’d like to think that the cracking is connected to the attack that Yoru is about to unleash.
Fujimoto is clearly building up to something huge, and with every chapter, the stakes rise higher. The eerie parallels to Part 1, with Pochita back in control and the Gun Devil’s reappearance, suggest that we are headed for a climactic showdown that could rival even the greatest battles of Part 1.
We’ll have to wait and see how this all unfolds! Well, the next chapter drops in a week, so we should be getting our answers soon!
