Jujutsu Kaisen manga is slowly winding down. But that doesn’t mean the high octane action or the twists in each chapter too are mellowing.
JJK 263 was another highly enjoyable read, and Sukuna as usual managed to survive most of what was thrown at him by our protags. However, the chapter did raise some interesting questions.
One of them was Sukuna throwing up/spitting out his own fingers and eating them again. From what we saw in JJK 263, Sukuna threw up 3 fingers of his fingers, before eating them again.
He had already consumed the fingers before the fight with Gojo began, so what purpose did doing that serve?
Let’s take a look at the possible answers.
Why did Sukuna throw up and eat his fingers again?
There are two parts to this question. The first is how or why Sukuna threw up the fingers he had consumed. Well, the answer probably lies in Yuji’s dismantle technique.
In JJK 263 we learn that Yuji has used a binding vow to narrow the range of his dismantle. This lets him strike the boundary between Sukuna and Megumi’s soul.
Yuji has been the trump card when it came to separating Sukuna from Megumi’s body. As revealed previously, Yuji’s blows were capable of reducing the sync between Sukuna’s soul.
This new dismantle was no different either, and as revealed in the chapter, it was more effective at rendering the souls apart.
The reason why Sukuna was able to keep Megumi’s soul in check is because he consumed 18 fingers plus the head of his mummified body. Unlike Itadori, Megumi was not created specifically as a foil to Sukuna, and the King of Curses basically gained control of his body.
This was further solidified by the bath and also Tsumiki’s death.
The fingers never get digested neither can they be destroyed (as shown in chapter 2). I am assuming that they just assimilate with the body in some other way, releasing the essence of the soul and cursed energy it housed.
And now that Itadori was striking the border of Megumi and Sukuna’s souls, the fingers that were key to Sukuna reincarnating in Megumi’s body started being thrown out.
While spitting out the fingers, Sukuna mentions that he won’t be able to maintain this body if Itadori’s attacks continued. This adds more credibility to our assumption here.
That said, this could be Akutami’s way of visually representing that Megumi and Sukuna’s body were going out of sync. It’s a simple and effective manner to communicate this.
So, in short, Sukuna throwing up the fingers was basically because of Itadori’s dismantle attack disrupting the sync between Megumi and Sukuna’s bodies. He consumed them back immediately in a bid to not lose control of the body.
Another possible explanation could be that Sukuna himself spit out the fingers and consumed them again in-order to re-exert the control on Megumi’s body.
This assumption rests on the detail that was provided in chapter 250, with Sukuna himself stating that Itadori’s attacks resulted in Sukuna’s cursed energy output being reduced and the attunement of his and Megumi’s physical forms being disrupted.
On realizing what Itadori’s dismantle was doing the same, albeit more efficiently, Sukuna might have come up with this solution as a way to reinforce his cursed energy and also the control on Megumi’s body.
After all, consuming the fingers was a sure shot way of gaining more cursed energy. We have seen this happen in the past. Whenever Itadori consumed a finger, Sukuna’s presence in him grew and became more fearsome.
Since the King of Curses’ output was reducing, eating the fingers might have temporarily helped him regain his lost Cursed Energy levels.
And since the fingers are technically indestructible, Sukuna probably can keep doing this when needed. That seems like too big of a hax and it probably has some drawbacks that we are not aware of yet!
