Kohei Horikoshi recently shared his views when it came to producing anime films based on manga series.
In a recent interview included in the My Hero Academia You’re Next comic book, the manga author shared that he prefered original stories in anime films over canonical ones.
Horikoshi’s preference was shaped by his admiration for Dragon Ball movies, which he used to watch at his local community centre. These movies often featured unique plots unrelated to the main series.
He compared this approach with the current trend of anime films adapting specific arcs from the manga, as seen in series like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Jujutsu Kaisen.
“In the past, I used to watch the new Dragon Ball movies at my local community center. However nowadays, series like Kimetsu No Yaiba or Jujutsu Kaisen have movies focused on events that actually happened in the manga series.“
While acknowledging the appeal of such films, he reiterated his preference for films that present original narratives.
The My Hero Academia franchise has thus far adhered to Horikoshi’s preference, with all its movie adaptations presenting original stories.
“While that’s fine and all, I personally prefer movies like the Dragon Ball ones that I enjoyed in the past, with original stories that only exists within those movies. I’m very thankful that all our movies have been like that thus far.“
My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: You’re Next hit the Japanese theatres on Aug 2, 2024.
It also surpassed the opening day revenue of the previous series record holder, My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: World Heroes’ Mission, by 118%.
