The Boy And The Heron Wins Golden Globe 2024 For Best Animated Film


The official website of the Golden Globe Awards revealed the winners of Golden Globes 2024 on Jan 7, 2024, and the award for the Best Motion Picture – Animated was bagged by Hayao Miyazaki’s latest anime film ‘The Boy And The Heron‘. This historic victory marks the first-ever win for an anime film at the Golden Globes.

The Boy And The Heron‘ competed against  Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume No Tojimari, Universal Pictures’ ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘, Sony Pictures’ ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘, and Disney’s ‘Elemental‘ and ‘Wish‘.

Toshio Suzuki, producer and Studio Ghibli co-founder, expressed his excitement on the big win, stating, “I am very happy to hear the news that The Boy and the Heron has received an award at the historic Golden Globe Awards. This is the first Golden Globe awarded to a Studio Ghibli film and it is a very special feeling.
Since the beginning of this year, Japan has been hit by a series of tragic earthquakes and accidents. When I hear the reports of many people still waiting for rescue in the disaster areas, I am filled with a sense of despair. In such a situation, I hope the bright news of winning an award can bring a smile to everyone’s face, even if only a little.  The Boy And The Heron, released in Japan on July 14, 2023. It became the first ever Studio Ghibli film to get simultaneous IMAX release. It also became the first-ever animated film as well as Japanese film to open the 48th Toronto International Film Festival.

Joe Hisashi composed music for the anime film. The film features 37 soundtracks including the theme song. Kenshi Yonezu performed the film’s theme song, “Chikyuugi”.

The Golden Globe Awards are accolades bestowed, for excellence in both American and international film and television. It is an annual award ceremony held since 1944 to honor artists and professionals and their work.

In 2007 a new category was introduced: Best Animated Feature Film. The first year’s nominees were Cars, Happy Feet, and Monster House, with Pixar’s Cars taking the Globe.

Golden Globes now recognize achievements in 27 categories; 14 in motion pictures and 13 in television. January 10, 2023, marked the 80th Golden Globe Awards.
