Cygame‘s mobile/browser RPG Granblue Fantasy has been on the market since 2014. To mark its 10th anniversary, a CygamesPictures-produced anime short with lavish animation has been released.
Sharing storyboard and direction duties for the video are Meka Aoratos (Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 OP 1 key animator, Delicious in Dungeon Episode 6 key animator) and Shinnosuke Itou (Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode 3). The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls U149‘s Shigekazu Kondou served as the animation producer.
Some of the other staff include Marucho Shouten’s Kazuhiro Inoue (The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls U149) as art director, CygamesPictures’ Tomohiro Maeda (Manaria Friends 3DCG director) and Rocket Vision’s Fuyuto Muraguchi (Arknights “Lone Trail” PV) as color coordinator and finishing checker.
Since the release of the game, which takes place in a world of islands that drift among the clouds, Granblue Fantasy has grown into a multimedia franchise that includes manga, light novels, and a TV anime adaptation with two seasons. It also inspired an action RPG for Playstation 4, 5, and Steam titled Granblue Fantasy Re: Link that was released in February 2024.
The official synopsis of the original mobile RPG is:
There exists a world in which islands of all shapes and sizes float in a sea of clouds. This is a world forsaken by the gods.
A long time ago, beings known as the Astrals attempted to seize control of this world with their overwhelming power. However, the citizens of the skies, the Skydwellers, successfully resisted. The world once again entered a time of peace.
Presently, our hero is about to embark on a journey after receiving a letter from his missing father. Accompanying him is Vyrn, a rather peculiar family member who happens to be a winged lizard. Despite Vyrn’s objections, our hero prepares to leave his home of Zinkenstill when the mysterious island is suddenly engulfed in flames.
The fleet of the burgeoning Erste Empire wreaks havoc from the skies above.
Amidst the chaos, a chance encounter with a mysterious girl named Lyria awakens the fallen dragon of the stars, who unleashes a roar of revival.
