Haruhi Suzumiya Light Novels’ 13th Volume Gets November 29 Worldwide Release

The 13th volume of the Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series, Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekijou (The Theater of Haruhi Suzumiya) will have a worldwide simultaneous release on November 29 JST.

The announcement was accompanied by the cover illustration of the new volume, which features Mikuru Asahina and Yuki Nagato.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekijou, the first new Haruhi Suzumiya volume since 2020’s The Intuition of Haruhi Suzumiya, was announced in September 2023. Reports from back then said that the volume will include the Suzumiya Haruhi Gekijou (Haruhi Suzumiya Theater) and Kaettekita Suzumiya Haruhi Gekijou (The Returned Haruhi Suzumiya Theater) short stories, which were originally published in The Sneaker magazine in 2004 and 2006, respectively, as well as a new sequel to those stories.

According to a press release, Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekijou will see Haruhi and the SOS Brigade getting whisked to various settings, ranging from a fantasy land where they have to defeat a demon lord and outer space to the Wild West and a mythological realm. It will be sold at 770 yen (~US$5.26), inclusive of tax.

It is currently unknown how the international release of Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekijou will play out. For The Intuition of Haruhi Suzumiya, Yen Press released a digital edition of its English translation simultaneously with its Japanese launch, with a physical release following later.

The first volume of the Haruhi Suzumiya series was released in 2003. The books are written by Nagaru Tanigawa, illustrated by Noizi Itou, and published under the KADOKAWA Sneaker Bunko imprint. Yen Press describes the first entry, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, as:

When Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself to Kyon by asking if he’s an alien, time traveler, or psychic, he knows his chances for a normal high school experience are ruined. Bold Haruhi takes a shine to him, and uses the force of her irrepressible personality to draft him into her club to find paranormal beings. Kyon soon discovers what she’s looking for: Haruhi herself has the power to destroy and create entire universes at her whim. But if she knew about her ability, it could spell disaster for everyone.

The light novels have inspired a 2006 Kyoto Animation-produced TV anime titled The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. A second series, which combines the original 14 episodes with new content, including infamous “Endless Eight” arc, began airing in 2009. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya anime movie was released the following year.

There are also Haruhi Suzumiya manga and video games, as well as a Yuki Nagato-centered spin-off manga titled The Disappearance of Yuki Nagato. The Disappearance of Yuki Nagato has its own anime adaptation, produced by Satelight.
