The award winning Jujutsu Kaisen TV anime series has officially been named the “world’s most in-demand animated TV show” according to a new certification from the Guinness World Records. It takes the title from Attack on Titan, which held the distinction since 2020.
Guinness World Records’ announcement and decision was based on statistics from data science firm Parrot Analytics, which noted that Jujutsu Kaisen had a global demand rating 71.2 times greater than that of the average TV show.
The firm pointed to the end-of-year surge the show had that put its popularity well ahead of other series. New episodes of the second season were released starting in July 2023 and continued until the end of the year, with demand for the show rising through this broadcast period. The anime peaked on December 29, 2024 at 128 times the demand of the average show, as the anticipated “The Shibuya Incident” story arc was being adapted.
Gen Z, who comprise of the ages between 13–22, comprised 71.3% of Jujutsu Kaisen’s viewers, resonating with a younger audience than both One Piece (56.7% Gen Z) and Attack on Titan (64.4%).
Parrot Analytics calculates “demand” based on how much attention, engagement, desire, and viewership is expressed by consumers for content. Moreover, actions which require more effort on the consumer’s part, such as watching or downloading a show, are weighed more heavily when calculating demand. Their system collects billions of new data points each day by analyzing video consumption (streaming and downloads), social media engagement (hashtags, likes, shares), and research actions (looking up a show on IMDb).
Meanwhile, One Piece enjoyed a boost in interest because of Netflix’s successful live-action adaptation, which brought in new fans to the series and inspired current fans to rewatch past episodes. Attack on Titan, which ended in November 2023, remained popular, but narrowly came up short.
The second season of Jujutsu Kaisen ran from July to December 2023, with the “Shibuya Incident Arc” beginning a few weeks after the initial “Hidden Inventory Arc.” The first season ran from late 2020 to early 2021 for a total of 24 episodes. The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 anime movie prequel was released in Japan in December 2021. An anime adaptation of the manga’s “Culling Game Arc” was announced last December.
MAPPA is the animation production company. Crunchyroll is currently streaming all seasons worldwide, outside of Japan.
The anime series is based on the supernatural action manga by Gege Akutami, which began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump on March 5, 2018. Twenty-six tankobon volumes have been released as of April 2024.
Viz Media releases the manga series in English, describing the first volume as:
