It has been two years since a second season of The Detective is Already Dead was first announced and the latest update on the series is the unveiling of a new “ultra” teaser visual. The new visual was released during the MF Bunko J Natsu no Gakuensai 2024 livestream.
More information about the second season was not revealed, aside from its status as still “in production.”
The first season was directed by Manabu Kurihara (Uzaki-chan Wants To Hang Out character designer) with Shinichi Fukumoto (Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs co-director) as assistant director, Deko Akao (When Will Ayumu Make His Move?) as series composer, and Yosuke Ito (Hensuki: Are You Willing To Fall In Love With A Pervert, As Long As She’s A Cutie?) as character designer. ENGI was the animation production company.
The anime is based on the light novel series written by Nigojuu and illustrated by Umibouzu. It was first published by Kadokawa’s Media Factory division on November 25, 2019 and was awarded the 15th MF Bunko J Light Novel Rookie of the Year that year. Eleven volumes have been released as of March 2024.
A manga adaptation of The Detective Is Already Dead by Mugiko began in late 2020, while a manga spin-off by Poni titled The Detective Is Already Dead -the lost memory- began in 2021. Yen Press releases the manga, as well as the light novel series, in English for North America.
Another manga spin-off titled To Aru Tantei to Joshu no Rabukometeki Nichijou @Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru from Moyashi Ime was released in 2021, which is serialized on Twitter.
Crunchyroll streamed the first season of The Detective Is Already Dead, describing the synopsis as:
After thwarting a hijacking with beautiful, silver-haired detective Siesta, Kimihiko leads a life of globe-trotting and crime-solving — until Siesta dies. A year later, a new case will open old wounds as it threads murder, conspiracy, and his dead partner!
