Voice actor Toru Furuya will no longer play the roles of Detective Conan‘s Toru Amuro/Rei Furuya and One Piece‘s Sabo.
A statement from Furuya’s agency Aoni Production (via a June 22 JST Mantan Web report) said that this conclusion came after talks with the 70-year-old voice actor, and that Furuya was asked to step down.
In May, it was revealed that Furuya, who also voiced characters like Mobile Suit Gundam‘s Amuro Ray and Sailor Moon‘s Tuxedo Mask, had a multi-year affair with a fan that involved an instance of violence and an abortion. The affair ended last September. Earlier this month, he was removed from the cast of the upcoming JRPG Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Furuya’s own statement (also via Mantan Web) described his stepping down as a form of atonement and included an apology. Both statements mentioned that Detective Conan and One Piece, as well as the Toru and Sabo characters, have had their images tarnished.
